This DVD and USB2 Key contain scanned images of 23 diaries, two guest books, and Graham’s Autobiography as well as a graphical timeline of his life. Scans were made in color at 266dpi using an Epson Artisan 837. Adobe Acrobat Pro DC was used to create pdf files, optimize them and add metadata. The diaries were handwritten by DCG in English cursive script. They occasionally include some handwritten Chinese characters, hand drawn diagrams and maps, and Romanized transcriptions.
The Autobiography was typed on DCG’s manual typewriter in the 1950s. He used carbon paper to make copies for each daughter. His daughters photocopied it and distributed copies to family members. The scanned images on this DVD are from the best photocopy available. The location of the original typed copy is not known.
Among the diaries, five are hand copied duplicates of diaries that are in the Smithsonian collection. Eighteen of the diaries are unique and unseen before the production of this DVD in 2019. Their contents include references to his archaeological work, observations on religion, social customs, language, etc. of the Ch’uan Miao, references to Japanese bombing, 1938 Boxer uprising, sketches of temples, a grand tour of museums of the world on the eve of WWII, activities during furlough in the U.S., returning to China via Burma and the extended time trying to get through, writing about Burma and the Christian community, studying the Ch’iang language and religion, museum work, cave tombs, Lolo customs, outreach to black ministers in Denver, Colorado in the 1950s, notes on sermons, etc.
The guest books are mainly from Graham’s time in Chengdu and contain hundreds of signatures and comments from around the world in multiple languages. Many notable guests who visited West China Union University were entertained at the Graham’s house and signed these guest books.
The text file with the table of contents and descriptions of the diaries has both an English and Chinese version.
